Need help. How do I swap small silver for large silver?
I have 927 each 90% silver dimes I'd like to convert into Silver Dollars (Morgans and Peace dollars).
My question is this: Is there a way I can convert them without losing any silver ounces? How many silver dollars can I get with them? What math formula would I need to convert this all out? I bought all these dimes at my local coin shop when silver was at a different price than it is today. Trouble is, the spot price of silver keeps changing and so it keeps throwing me off in my conversion scheme, so I am a bit leery of loosing any ounces I already have if I were to convert them over into the larger coins. How would I do this? Any help you could provide would be appreciated. Thanks |

Silver Dollars command a greater premium than smaller denomination 90%.
You'll have to either give up ounces or cash. Quote:

You can determine the value of the silver in your dimes by counting up their face-value in dollars, and then multiplying that times the current spot price of silver.
i.e. $18.30 spot x .715 = about $13.08 worth of silver in a $1.00 face value lot of the dimes. The silver dollars you want are worth more than the value of the silver they contain. If you want to know the value of the silver in a somewhat circulated silver dollar, multiply .772 times the current spot price of silver. ie. at a spot price of $18.30, the value of silver in a somewhat circulated silver dollar is $18.30 x .772 = $14.15 ...but this coin with a common date will probably cost you $15.50-$16.00. Just shop around...get the best deal you can for your dimes and then get the best deal you can for your dollar coins. Expect that the price will be a bit higher for Morgan dollars then it will be for Peace-type dollars. |

You cannot have your cake and eat it, too. You must expect to lose silver ounces in any such conversion. Unless you want to pay cash for the difference.

It'll cost you 10 dimes and at least one War Nickel (.0501). That is if you are trading for straight silver content. Morgans have semi-numismatic and Numismatic value in most cases. I have morgans worth $300-$400 that 5 years ago were $50-$55 for a long time. Bottom line is that a Morgan or a Peace contain more silver than any combination of %90 $1.00 face value. My advise is to hang on to the dimes, they are going to come in handy some day (soon). Maranatha, P.S. You could always trade for quarter's or halves. If you can find someone willing to do so. |
